Profile

A Lead Product Designer with 10+ years of experience across UX, UI and frontend development. I lead design for global shopper and merchant products, combining user research, accessibility and hands-on implementation. I create shared systems that help teams deliver consistent experiences.

Experience

Fruugo

January 2022 to present

Lead UI UX Designer

Lead UI and UX design across Fruugo’s global shopper marketplace and merchant products, combining research, design direction and hands-on delivery.

  • Led a company-wide accessibility audit across shopper and merchant products, using WCAG Level AA to identify barriers and working with Engineering and Legal to prioritise changes supporting European Accessibility Act readiness.
  • Lead a three-person UX team, maintaining shared design direction and mentoring colleagues across multiple workstreams. Introduced embedded designers to give product teams a dedicated UX contact, and recruited and onboarded two designers.
  • Brought colleagues into discovery using Opportunity Solution Trees, connecting research findings with opportunities and comparing possible solutions before committing to a direction.
  • Led a contextual multilingual audit to turn shopper trust concerns and merchant translation problems into priorities for typography and language controls across Marketplace, Checkout and merchant tools.
  • Used Hotjar recordings, GA4 journey data and completion-time evidence to simplify merchant onboarding. Agreed with Sales and Technical Integration which questions could move to integration, reducing the information merchants needed to provide upfront.
  • Developed an AI shopping assistant from the CTO’s proof of concept, leading UX, frontend implementation and product character identity.
  • Created and maintained the shared Figma component library, aligning with engineers on React components in Storybook. Enabled designers to build realistic, multilingual prototypes without recreating established patterns for each project.

Recommendation

I’ve had the privilege of working with Matt for several years, and without hesitation, I can say he’s the best colleague I’ve worked with in my career.

Matt is an outstanding UX designer who genuinely puts users at the heart of every decision he makes. He has a remarkable ability to balance business goals with real user needs, always backing up his design decisions with research and data rather than assumptions. His passion for accessibility is something I deeply admire. He consistently champions inclusive design, ensuring people with a wide range of needs and abilities are considered throughout the design process. His empathy for users is evident in everything he does, and he never loses sight of designing products that work for everyone.

Matt also has an impressive depth of technical knowledge, which allows him to collaborate seamlessly with engineers and make well-informed design decisions. He combines user-centred thinking, evidence-based decision making, technical expertise, and outstanding collaboration in a way that’s incredibly rare.

Beyond being an exceptional designer, Matt has been an incredible mentor. He’s always been generous with his time, coaching me, encouraging my professional growth, and giving me the confidence to push myself further in my career. His support has had a lasting impact on my development, and I’ve learned so much from working alongside him.

Any team would be fortunate to have Matt. He’s not only an exceptional UX designer but also a genuinely kind, supportive, and inspiring person to work alongside. I hope I have the opportunity to continue working with him for many years to come.
